Defending Against
the Human Element
Besides Environmental Extremes and the possibility of Mechanical
Damage, your valuable equipment being shipped must also contend with the Human Element.
DON'T FORGET!
Mechanical Devices, on their own, don't cause damage -
those individuals operating them do!
Environmental
Extremes can often be avoided if the individual handling your equipment
follows certain procedures and guidelines.
Also, don't forget, your equipment is being shipped in the 'real
world.' Time is critical - your trade show starts in 4 days, set-ups' in 2 days. The
commercial is being filmed in 3 days. The performance takes place in 4 days. Your product
introduction is in 2 days.
To meet these demands, freight must move quickly, and,
unfortunately, the first thing to be sacrificed is gentle, prudent handling.
Your equipment is dropped, kicked, shoved, stuffed, forked, dragged,
and otherwise roughly handled in its quest to arrive at your specified destination. Always
remember, the equipment you've shipped is your property, not the property of the
individual handing it on and off the truck, in and out of the belly of the aircraft, or up
and down on the forklift. This persons' job is to meet a time schedule - GET THAT FREIGHT
TO ITS' DESTINATION WHEN PROMISED! It gets punctured, scuffed or otherwise defaced in the
process, that's the responsibility of the freight claims department. The handler has done
his or her job - your freight (in whatever condition) has arrived on time - as promised.
No specific claims, afterall, were ever made about its relative condition upon arrival.
